After the pour and safety
After the pour
The After the pour stage on the Investing & burnout tab takes you from the cast flask to clean metal:
- Quench and devest, with the wait before quenching for your investment.
- Pickle the tree to remove oxides and flux, and deal with any fire scale.
- Cut the castings off the tree.
- Recover the button and sprues for the next melt.
- Clean the flask and the work area, and dispose of the spent investment safely.
Then the pieces are ready for finishing.
Never quench a flask with stones cast in place. Let it cool. See Casting with stones in place.
Safety checklist
The Safety checklist covers the main hazards of a casting day:
- Silica dust from investment powder: wear a proper dust mask when mixing.
- Ventilation and burnout fumes.
- PPE for the melt and pour: eye protection, gloves and clothing.
The checklist can be printed with the burnout sheet.
